I signed up for the Joanne's Fabric mailing list by hand. I got a card in the mail with a coupon and "For Mather Seerlo" printed on it (now in the collection of Jordan Stein). My sister saw it (we were housemates at the time) and said, you should hold onto that. I put it on my bulletin board and looked at it intermittently for the next year and a half or so. I had always felt that my capital A art was missing something - a certain juice. When I moved to San Francisco, everything started to fall into place. I found incredible clothing, books, objects, and materials all over the sidewalks. One time, I found ninja stars and theosophy books - yowza! That New Years, I was in Chicago with Matisse and my friend, the artist Jonathan Chamberlain. I wore a tie and pin with a found handmade, zippered vest - really a proto Mather. Shortly after, I got connected to CELLspace where they were having some sort of market. With that invitation, I decided to sell jewelry combining children’s museum debris and sewage drain findings. I painted a sign that said Mather Seerlo's Bcktglk (Bucketglock). Shortly after, I released a limited run of 15 minute cassettes featuring improvised croons over murky breakbeats. My San Francisco apartment became a living work/archive by Mather—a rent-controlled gesamtkunstwerk.

The residency with Glass, house was the catalyst to finally make Mather's hairdo. Perhaps the last remaining step is to get snake eye contacts made in the style of my earliest drawings. I also want to make a Mather do with my own hair and then commission other artists to make Mather's dos for me.

Two live musical performances are known.

Seerlo's residency with Glass, house marked the maiden voyage of Mather’s fully realized image, featuring triangular hair, oversize floral vests, and matching shirt and tie. In character, he instigated improvised collaborations in the streets of San Francisco over the course of three days that met at the intersection of street performance and the visual arts. Concurrently, he co-produced a camp for adult and child artists in Chicago, experimenting with long-distance mentoring through Skype and mail art."
